Love Aaj Kal

I had composed this when I saw the movie. Dated review.

Saw Love Aaj Kal. This is one of the most talked about, awaited movie of the season. Saif Ali Khan's first home production, with Deepika Padukone and directed by Imtiaj Ali (the Jab We Met guy).

And before I move on, please be warned that I will be talking about plot hereafter.

So the story goes like this. Saif Ali Khan (don't remember his onscreen name) is a typical gen-next who falls in and out of love as easily as people change clothes. But for some reason he sticks around with Meera (yes thats what Deepika Padukone is called). Then they have to move to different countries for their work and all. They get into this huge debate about practicality and love. Since both Saif and Meera are educated and think a lot, they decide that they need to part ways. Fair enough. I can relate to it. I have parted ways with someone with similar arguments (because we thought we cant work out things with emotions and if looked at practically, things wont work).

So, Meera moves to India. Saif bumps into Veer Singh (aka Rishi Kapoor). Veer Ji, once upon a time, had fallen into love with one Harleen Kaur (aka who?) at first sight. Ms Kaur moves to Kolkatta, VeerJiloans money, sits in the Punjab-Kolkatta train and follows her there, apparently to have one last look. All this happen and they dont even exchange words except some mush encounters.

Now Veer Ji tells his story to Saif and then a lot of mumbo jumbo later, Saif and Meera get together. And they live happily ever after.

I wish I could critically review the movie (as good as 2s does for mutiny) but since I cant, I can only point at good things and bad things.

Good things to start with
  • Rishi Kapoor
  • Ms. Padukone. She looks stunning in her shaadi outfit.
  • Music. Chor Bazari, Aaj Din Chhadeya are simply awesome. If you cant buy the music and give two hoots to piracy, you might want to download songs from here.
  • Last scene of the movie when Harleen has grown up into Neetu Singh.
And bad things
  • Ms. Padukone cant dance or act.
  • Harleen cant act.
  • There was only one moment that made me laugh. Otherwise humor is drab and flat.
And final rating? 1.5 on 5. And this does not comes from a professional reviewer (if there is a breed like that). I am an armchair activist at best.

And btw I am not sure how Imtiaj Ali wrote our story without meeting us.

Private and/or Public

So, after my last few posts, someone very special asked me what is the merit in having a public blog that anyone can read. What kicks do I get by sharing my life with strangers? I was told that I share things that are very private in nature and yet allow everyone to read them.

I think blogging helps me. It helps me put structure to my thoughts. I helps me take a stock of situations. I helps me with vital feedback and links me to the outside world. And obviously its a great marketing tool. I cant imagine not having a blog. A vent. A window to the world. A place where gyaan, bakar and conversations flow.

However, I do realize that I tend to get personal when I am writing and I need to stop that. Since writing is such an integral part of me, I shall start a new blog, private, strictly for myself and few very dear friends.

On War of Words, I shall only share random interestingness and oddities. I will talk about things like Bing's and Yahoo's "merger" in the search business, Manmohan Singh's reply in the Parliament, Bangladesh winning a cricket series over West Indies and so on so forth. And obviously I would keep writing fiction and posting one word posts. Hoping that they are cryptic enough to hide things ;P

And for the other blog, lemme know if you want access to that. There ARE early bird prizes.

Life 2.0. Part 1: Work

So after ab0ut a week of rest/leisure/running-around/buying-computers/explaining-to-mom-why-i-resigned/thinking/procrastinating and hazaar other things, I am back to action. I started work. No, I did not join any company but I started thinking about life and what I want to do next.

Working for myself is way different from working for someone else (GE Money or Creativeland Asia). Let me write them down in bullet points.
  1. Home Sweet Home. While working for self, I work out of home. This means I have to tolerate door bells, telephone bells, courier deliveries, maids and other such sundry things. I also have to be polite to mother India who is trying to feed me with her best preparations. I have to get creative while answering questions from relatives (in some cases lying to them). There, no one wanted to know how much I earned, how bald am I, how long does it take to reach from CP to East Delhi etc. No questions asked, easy life.
  2. Money. Not to mention that constant worry of where that next rupee would come from. After all I am used to an extravagant life style. In Mumbai, I knew my paycheck (not that fat) would arrive by the first week and I could splurge it on gifts, knick-knacks (all those tiny obscure things that I got for P, rruts, random people), pool (lost most of the times to Gandhi and won most of the times from Gawri), restaurants (next time you are in Mumbai, try Caravan Serai) and teeshirts (white/black, one large block on print on chest and thats about it).
  3. Place. While working for someone else, I could concentrate. There was tea/coffee/soup (which sucked btw) on demand. The loo was always clean (ok not always, but mostly). I had a place that no one else could take. My desk. My drawer. Here in Delhi, I dont even have a room to myself. The things that my "almost girlfriend" gave me when I was leaving Mumbai, I dont have a place to put them up (show off). P.S. I hope you ARE reading this and you now know why I haven't unpacked gift #5 :).
  4. Computer. I did not share my Macbook with anyone. Although it was company property but the company had entrusted it to me and it meant I could customize it the way I want, it had my music on it, my passwords were saved onto it and so on and so forth Here I share my desktop with my dad and my cousin. Thankfully my sis is still in Mumbai. And since they belong to the Garg clan, they are curious by nature and on top of everything else, they know how to access hidden folders in Windows.
  5. Media. I had access to printed copies of ten newspapers, 20 odd periodicals including Wired (which IMHO is one of the greatest publications ever). Now I have to rely on RSS feeds and a electronic screen to know what is happening in the world. I have a fetish for printed material. I dont think as long as people like me are alive, printed media is ever going to run out of business. Here I get three newspapers that I don't even read. I have no clue why I dont.
  6. Time. Time management is an issue. Not trying to brag but I loved reaching office before anyone and playing my music out loud (Hindi songs mostly). And here, I wake up at leisure, laze around, roll in my bed, dream, snooze etc before I even get out of my bed. Leave alone computers. That sense of discipline has vanished. Though I used to work strictly till 5:30 PM, I somehow had time for reading, writing, blogging, meeting people, coming up with ideas and all that. Here I am always short of time. I haven't read my RSS in days, replied to my mails, twittered, FBed, Linkedined or even blogging.
  7. Resources. I could use copious amounts of pens, pencils, pantone books, notepads, staplers, post-its and other items of miscellany. Now I need to scavenge a pencil, write on the edges of newspapers, buy my own post-its and keep the use in check.
  8. People. I had access to tons of wonderful people. They had brains, talents, ideas and they were my window to the world. Every individual was special and taught me something. Now, only people I have access to are people I meet for cyntax and thats about it.
There are like another 12,334,233 items in this list but since time is somewhat precious now, I shall not delve on em. And then there is rant on Mumbai vs Delhi. On similar lines. But again, tonight is not the right time. Any thoughts anyone on how to fix these things?

P.S.: While ending, got an idea. I will make this a multi-part list. Since I am effectively restarting my life (and hopefully this is that reset button we always talked about), in each part, I will rant about my life on one specific thing. Today it was on work. Next would be Mumbai/Delhi. Will think about the third when am there.

Settling down

Finally dust has began to settle. I am finding my groove. Will be going on full steam in few days. Keep watching.

Moved On.

For the record, I am no longer employed with Creativeland Asia. The decision to move on was a personal and I am glad I am still very good friends with the entire team back at CLA.

The two years went past in a jiffy. Little more than two years ago, I joined CLA from GE Money and things couldn't have worked out better. While I was there,
  • CLA grew from a dining table to two offices (thought I dint play any part in that growth),
  • I was given a lot of room to learn, experiment, make mistakes and grow,
  • I learnt how is it to work on brands like Frooti, Appy Fizz, Cafe Coffee Day (amongst others),
  • I made many good friends (and almost found the love of my life),
  • I travelled and explored Mumbai and Maharashtra extensively
  • And finally I grew by miles as a person.
I wish I could have stayed on but as they say, all good things, come to an end.

Creativeland IMHO is one of the best places to work at. Apart from coming up with great work time after time for all brands, CLA is a collection of few of the finest minds and interesting people. Everyone is handpicked (even our receptionist - Prakash Jee aka Yogi Bear) and its a lot of fuin being there.

If anyone is keen, I would be glad to setup a meeting.

P.S.: Just for the curious few, I dont know what I would be doing now. Would post here moment something is finalized.

I am ...

26. Going onto 27.
Intelligent. Frustrated.
Bored. Fragile.
Sleepy. Disgusted.
In love. In despair.
Suffering from QLC. Awaiting for that AHA moment.

I lied.

I lied.

I lied to her. I just did not know any other way to tell her that I am going. Away. Forever.

Apart from being a mere financial support to her, I was at times her emotional support, her agony aunt uncle, her baby-sitter, her friend, her doctor, her son and everything else.

I cant say I was being good at any of it but I made sure I did whatever I could. And now that I am going away, I realize that it is so easy for people to just move on. And very unlike what movies proclaim. Anyways, this is a rant for some other day. For the time being, I am sad that I had to lie and find an easy way out of the soup I was in.

I was told/taught/preached that truth never hurts nobody. I am no sage, no legend and I am not honest for sure. But truth, hurt me.

Blogging is no fun ...

Counter-intuitive?

Of millionaires, gods and rock stars

Quote of the day.
Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.
Said Tyler Durden, in the Fight Club (wiki, imdb).

August 1, 2009

I talked about few dates here (6th June, 9th June and 4th July). As luck would have it, they have moved. I dont know for good or for bad. But they have moved.

The new date is August 1, 2009. Fingers crossed.

@Saurabh is back

@Saurabh is back.

For the uninitiated, twitter suspended my account last week. I am now told that it was because the link on my account was compromised. I did everything to get it back. Wrote to them, made blogposts, spoke to experts, updated FB, asked for help.

And few people heard. They came forward and helped.

Starting with Zishaan, Rajesh and Rina who helped me understand the problem to all the people who tweeted and re-tweeted. This is going to be a long list. I did not know I had so many friends. AaruC, dhempe, FagunB, umeshg, sharadaprasad, GauravSaha, krist0ph3r, SLotH13, Raj_S, fossiloflife, danishctc, aritra_m, Gagan, prolificd, anaggh, sahnigagan, sakthidharan, saaket, Netra, iMBA, KapilJoshi, nakulshenoy, Sampad, mtaram, deepakravindran, punkpolkadots, b50, thinkerwrites. I hope I did not miss a name.

Thank you guys. You rock. And this is my followfriday list come friday :)

P.S.: I missed twitter while my account was gone. :|

@Saurabh finds friends on Twitter

After my Twitter account was suspended due to "strange activity" (which Zishaan, Rajesh and Rina helped me track to a malicious attack on my website), I have been trying to get the twitter account back. I wrote to twitter help, made this blogpost, posted messages on Facebook and asked for help from my online friends.

And it came.

Thanks to AaruC, dhempe, FagunB, umeshg, sharadaprasad, GauravSaha, krist0ph3r, SLotH13, Raj_S, fossiloflife, danishctc, aritra_m for their tweets and retweets. You guys rock.

This is what they did. Only thing that remains to be seen is if I get my account back. Anyone else wants to tweet? re-tweet?

@Saurabh is suspended

Twitter. How can I live without it for a single day. Action, inaction, attention, ignorance, work, play, meetups, tweetups, its everywhere.

I went to Delhi and when I came back after about 4 days, I discovered that my twitter account @Saurabh has been suspended. Their support page says that they suspend an account if
  • Impersonation: You may not impersonate others through the Twitter service in a manner that does or is intended to mislead, confuse, or deceive others
  • Privacy: You may not publish or post other people's private and confidential information, such as credit card numbers, street address or Social Security/National Identity numbers, without their express authorization and permission.
  • Violence and Threats: You may not publish or post direct, specific threats of violence against others.
  • Copyright: We will respond to clear and complete notices of alleged copyright infringement. Our copyright procedures are set forth in the Terms of Service.
  • Unlawful Use: You may not use our service for any unlawful purposes or for promotion of illegal activities.
I have been using twitter since 2007 and have about 1400+ followers and 8730 updates. As far as I can remember I have NOT impersonated anyone, breached privacy, threatened anyone, violated copyright or used it for unlawful purposes. Wonder why is twitter showering me with all the attention after two years of use?

Mails to twitter support remain unanswered as I write this blog post (I did get an automated response telling me things that I already know). My previous experience with twitter support has been really great (when I changed my handle from @s4ur4bh to @Saurabh). Wondering what is taking so long this time.

I really want my account back. And I dont know how to do it. May be a tweet to @biz, @ev and @twitter asking them to reconsider? Any volunteers for the same? Or any other tips maybe?

UPDATE (2009Jun 30)
Zishaan pointed that my website SaurabhGarg.com is reported as unsafe by Google. And may be that is what is causing Twitter to block my website. I logged into my twitter account and it DID point my website as "[ unsafe link ]".

For the moment I have changed the url to point to this blog. Hope this would help expedite the process of removing suspension.

And this brings me to another problem. How do I fix my website? Twitter is important but SaurabhGarg.com is more important!! It cant be marked as a site "that may harm your computer". More help?

Delhi Trip - June 2009

Came back from Delhi last night, took a Go Air flight. Thank fully they have changed their dress code. They no longer wear those black denims and black tees. The ride was bumpy. For some time I thought I was in a train. But anyways, any trip to Delhi is fun and hectic. I stay in one of the remote corners of the city and it takes me forever to reach any other place. Would have easily spent 6 hours everyday on commuting. Not that roads are choked and all, just that distances are bit too much. No wonder I want to stay in a smallish city/town.

Today is PD's birthday (similarity with her blog URLs is purely coincidental). Happy Birthday PD. You have been an awesome friend. Wish I could spend more time with you.

So many things happened over the past week. Michael Jackson passed away. Nandan Nilekani left Infosys to take care of the ambitious NID project. And there are some not-so-consequential things that I would want to keep a note of.
  • Attended Sandy's wedding. Took elaborate notes. Might upload them on the blog sometime.
  • My twitter account (@Saurabh) and sgElectra's twitter account (@sgElectra) got suspended. I have no clue why would they do it.
  • Met Kunal. Scrapped some ideas for Cyntax. Thought of few new ones. We are back to square one now.
  • Met Vanita and Girish. I know them from MDI JFK. Had interesting discussions. More than discussions, I was confessing and they were being guiding light. Both had differenet opinions to the same problem and both of them merit a thought.
  • Sonali sent this couplet "Anjam-e gulistan kya hoga ... Har shaakh pey ullu baithe hain". I think its very pertinent and apt. Especially in the times we live in. Ayone knows the origin?
  • Neo thinks that hes now a vegetable.
  • I missed the Mensa AGM and an oppurtunity to meet up with other members. I am being lazy in sending my documents and all.
What else?

I am Mohan Bhargava

Every little kid is often asked - who is your hero. Answer vary from their dads to Supermans to Shaktimaans to Sachin Tendulkars to Mahatama Gandhis to Bhagat Singhs and what nots. If someone asked me when I was a kid, I wouldnt have known the right answer. I dont know what a hero is. And definately not what "my hero" is.

Ask me now. I know who my hero is. I know what "my hero" means. My hero is Mohan Bhargava. And yet not many would have heard about him. He is the protagonist in the movie Swades (website, wiki, imdb, movie on youtube).

Right now I am sad. For more than one reasons. One of them being my inability to do anything for my country. One might argue why such and alieginece to the land where I was born. And why just a country? Not a continent? Or not a state. I wish I had answers. All I have right now are pangs. Guilty pangs.

I want to be "foolishly romantic".

Mood: Depresed.
Listening to: A R Rahman's Vande Mataram and Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera (youtube)

Update: After I posted this, I have had three people telling me that they want to do the same and they have no clue how to go about it. Now the question is, what can we do about this.

I'm a Mensan!

About a month ago I took an administered Mensa test. It took 20 mins of test and a month's wait to get the results. And I am through. I am now a Mensan. I still have to complete the formalities of joining it and paying for the membership.

Most people I told this, dint even know what Mensa is. And then the few who know about it, asked, what I am going to do with it.

To be honest, I dont know what lies ahead. I asked the only other Mensan I know - Raunak (23, blog, Mensa member since 1999, part of Mumbai Value Investors club). He tells me that Mensa is a very close knit community of gifted people. They meet very often (almost once a month) and most meetings are lot of fun. Lot of mental masterbation happens. Lot of gyaan is exchanged. Lot of new things get uncovered, invented and discovered.

Of all things mentioned, I am most excited about meeting these gifted people. And discover amazing talents they bring to the table. Lets see how it goes. As they say, its just the beginning.

Unrelated Rant
Everytime I am listening to music and oblivious to sound around me, I enter a different world. I zoom out (zoom out as in zoom in and zoom out and look at a situation). I see people around me engaged in things that are important to them. Things I can never relate to.

And come to think of it I needed affirmation from a test to make me happy and feel good about myself. Now this has to change. And soon.

Update - 6th June, Goa, Futility

Been some time since I uploaded this blog. Few things worth mentioning have happened.

6th June happened to me. Do did 9th. And now waiting for the 4th. Its happening too fast and too slow. Its a blur and a dream. Its all there and it isnt.

Then I missed the deadline for TED India Fellows application. No it was not too complex. I was too lazy and I dint have a lot of substance to talk about.

Visited Goa. Went to a casino. Played Mini Flush for four hours. Won few rupees. Beginners luck probably. Saw mental models in action. Going to read more about Casinos, gambling etc. They says its one of those seven deadly vices. What are other six (hint hint)?

Spoke to Neo and Gandhi about life and all. Gandhi as always had no opinions. Neo had some. I could not comprehend most of them.

Thought about Cyntax. Wrote about it. Planning to get a designer to help me with it. Any volunteers?

Felt sorry for being rude and demanding. Said sorry. She was surprised. She said she was used to my tantrums and randomness. I had never said sorry since I have known her (since 2004). Five years is a lot of time.

Sandy getting married. And the future of PseudoSocial is now in a quandary. As if it wasn't in a jeopardy already. We have run it as an adopted child at best. And then the ever shrinking bachelor club, shrinks even further. More exclusions from the club are being planned as I write this (or you read this). I hope is not Neo or Gandhi.

Miss MDI more than ever. Reminds me of Rabbi Shergill's Gill Te Guitar.

Want to debate with someone on futility of our actions. And our thoughts. And our emotions. Dont have anyone to debate with. I even have doubts on the futility of these debates.

FB came up with vanity URLs. And the website is that important that I actually planned to check it when they were released. And I was disappointed that I could not get Saurabh. And now am blogging about it. Wonder how these "tools" take so much importance in our lives.

Then half wrote this rant. Even though India is a huge country, there are some things that are so Indian that you will find them in every nook and corner of the country. Buffalos for example. Stray dogs. Then electric wires hanging loosely on the poles. Chai shop. Cigarette shop. Then there are home grown brands like Agarwal Sweets, CCD etc in almost every locality worth living., Amongst them is this Maruti Suzuki service centre called Sai Service. Yes, that place with a blue and red flower logo. Every state that I have traveled to India has a Sai Service. And I am told one Mr. Suresh Kalmadi owns the chain. Now I need to know if he is the same Mr. Kalmadi who is more famous (actually rather infamous) for his role in the Indian Olympic Association. Any answers?

And then there is some more. I cant think of it now. May be later? Another uninteresting, boring, mundane week comes to an end. How many more?

Of Dreams, Happiness and Chase

We are bloody spending the money we don't have to chase the dreams that weren't ours hoping to find happiness that doesn't exist.

Stars and Religion

Ralph Waldo Emerson once asked
... what we would do if the stars only came out once every thousand years. No one would sleep that night, of course. The world would become religious overnight. We would be ecstatic, delirious, made rapturous by the glory of God. Instead the stars come out every night, and we watch television.

President Obama at Cairo, Egypt

President Obama's landmark speech at Cairo. Here is the youtube vid and complete transcript.

After watching President Obama speak, I realized that I have a long way to go before I even become an iota of what he is. In the speech, Obama ...
  • Praised Islam, Muslims. Not flattery but genuine appreciation.
  • Showed understanding of their culture. Used quotes from Koran.
  • Defended America.
And the speech
  • Was delivered flawlessly (apart from two or three mistakes)
  • Was not "read". He maintained eye contact throughout. Compare it with our leaders. They read from a paper. And forget that they are addressing an audience.
  • Was well practiced. Evident from near perfect pronunciation of words like Koran and hijab.
  • Took a lot of homework. Am sure this was written by a battery of diplomats and staff.
  • Stated things clearly. There was no ambiguity. There were no minced words.
  • Was firm and called for affirmative action.
Long way to go Mr. Garg !!

May 2009: Goals and Output. And bits of miscellany.

I have been away form all kinds of blogging (except twitter and occasion spam on JFK) for last week. I dont know why. Last week was actually one of those few times when I did some heavy soul-searching. Without any benefit ...

Not that I dint have opportunities. I went on this bike ride till Pune but again dint want to publish it. I put my bike on my website and twitter. I dint publish that. I made few cartoons (on the lines of Slog_More()), dint publish them either. Then I discovered this band caled Faridkot from Delhi. They do Hindi rock and are very good. I meant to blog about them but I did not.

I dont know why. I think I was living in some kind of an orb. More I try getting out of it, more dragged into it I get.

I am having this hard time understanding myself. This is one of those rare moments when I am ranting my true emotions and all. Please ignore the rhetoric.

Anyways, here is the monthly post on Goals and what I did about them. I had two simple goals for May. Start wearing shoes (that implied buy them and get used to them) and start writing the book (this implied stat re-writing the book that I started about six months back). Ladies and Gentlemen, I did neither. No, I am not proud.

And coming up in some time ... is goals for June 2009.

Maula Mere Lele Meri Jaan

Yet another song that I recently discovered on my iTunes and fell in love with.

This is from the movie Chak De India and if you put this in context of the movie, song is as apt as Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera from Swades.

Title: Maula Mere Lele Meri Jaan
Lyrics: Jaideep Sahni
Music: Salim-Sulaiman

(Bhiga/Tija Tera Rang Tha Main Toh - 2
Jiyaan Tere Dhang Se Main Toh, Tu Hi Tha Maula Tu Hi Aan
Maula Mere Le Le Meri Jaan - 2) - 2

Tere Sang Kheli Holi, Tere Sang Ki Diwaali
Tere Angano Ki Chhaaya, Tere Sang Saawan Aaya
Pher Le Tu Chaahe Nazarein, Chaahe Chura Lein
Laut Ke Tu Aayega Re Shart Laga Le
Bhiga/Tija Tera Rang Tha Main Toh - 2
Jiyaan Tere Dhang Se Main Toh, Tu Hi Tha Maula Tu Hi Aan
Maula Mere Le Le Meri Jaan - 2

Mitti Meri Thi Bhuri, Wahi Mere Ghi Aur Churi
Wahi Raanjhe Mere Woh Heer, Wahi Sevaiya, Wahi Khir
Tujhse Hi Ruthana Re, Tujhe Hi Manaana
Tera Mera Naata Koi Duja Na Jaana
Bhiga/Tija Tera Rang Tha Main Toh - 2
Jiyaan Tere Dhang Se Main Toh, Tu Hi Tha Maula Tu Hi Aan
Maula Mere Le Le Meri Jaan – 4

Journey and Reward

Saurabh says,
When you know the outcome, the journey does not remain exciting. It becomes yet another task. With deadlines and mundane rules.

Phase 1, 2 and 3

When you are on a trip, there are three phases that you go through. More mental than physical, these phases are what it makes riding so special.

So Phase 1 is when you have just started the trip and you are dreaming of all the good things that you would go through during the course of the ride. You already start dreaming of time when your thoughts are racing ahead of your bike that fast that your mind becomes numb, the road blurs and the roar of the bike is no longer there. The bike becomes a part of your body and its sound, your heartbeat. You can feel it. You can feel it coming. You are anticipating for the happy times.

Phase 2 is the actual state of bliss. The state that you dream of when you just set out to ride. This phase lasts just about few minutes before you are interrupted but these minutes are something that make the entire ordeal worth it. Some might want to compare this pleasure with orgasm. This is the time when your thoughts actually start to flow. This is that mental state that all the sages try to achieve. The state when they say they have attained nirvana. When everything else ceases to matter. Everything is put on hold. You ignore everything. All things big and all things small. You live in the now. You become part of it. You are now. You don’t make any grandiose plans. Things become clear. Clouds start parting.

And then the Phase 3. It’s like coming back from heaven. Or from hell for that matter. This is the time when you start thinking what to do next. About the next destination and the next journey. This is when you start reflecting on things. And most of your introspection happens. This is where you think about things that you are running away from and things that you are running towards. This is where you decide you want to change jobs, marry her, create a company, get rich, quit, restart, change world. This is where you actually plan it. First. Thoughts just pop up. You never thought you would think about those things. You never imagined you could think about those things. They suddenly appear out of nowhere.

That’s a different story that most of them are gone by the time the dust settles down. Some people do get lucky. They remember what they have been thinking about. What they need to do once they are back.

About me, I am about 2 rides old. Both of them less than 100 Kms. And I cant even imagine the joy and pain of an overnight ride. What would motivate someone to ride an entire day, sleep with a stiff back and get up next morning to go through the ordeal all over again. And with no one around to boast about this ride. No certificates to show. No titles to chase or defend. The entire idea looks anti-civilization to me. Weren't we suppose to settle down? Weren’t we supposed to be a part of a never-ending rat race? Weren't we supposed to slog and slog till one day when we realize we are 80 and we did everything but know ourselves better? And come to think of it, why exactly would one want to know himself better?

Most riders, including myself don’t think all this when they plan a ride. They just do it. They just want to get away. They want to run. They want to see places. They want to explore. Each trip brings with itself its own set of discoveries. And each trip creates its own set of memories.

Like this Rabbi Shergill song … “jaddon na kujh agge disse tahiyon bandaa vekhe picche”. Literally translated, “When you can’t see ahead, that is when you think about your past”.

I read somewhere that us humans work towards only one thing – that we would be missed when we are not around. I think everyone is trying to be immortal. We are trying not to die. We are trying to stay here forever. The rides are probably a step closer to that ever-elusive immortality. Some get it, when they are riding. And some unlucky ones don’t. The lucky ones get their bragging rights. And unlucky ones, get to ride another ride. Not much to chose between the two if you ask me.

We live our lives trying to be someone we are not. We look at all the wonderful things around us and suddenly we think we are supermen. We can do everything that everyone else is doing. And excel at it. And compete with people who have spent their lives working towards getting just a slight edge over you. We are not born with biking in our DNA. We grow up and along the way see someone or experience something that tilts our needles towards biking. I think, like all the trips, this post needs to be left hanging in air. In anticipation.

Of what?
I don't know. Yet.

Elections 09 - Reults

Results of elections 09 are out. Thankfully Congress led UPA has got a clear mandate. Though no one expected this outcome but now that its the writing on the wall, this effectively means ...
  1. We would have a stable govt for next five years. Unless a Black Swan happens.
  2. Left, Fourth front and other such frivolous concepts and ideologies would find no place in governance or decision making of the govt. And this means more development and investments in becoming efficient.
  3. Stage is set for Rahul Gandhi to get some much required experience in governance and policy making. He has been just talking all this while. Now is the time, over these next five years, he would hone his skills as a public servant. Obviously not at the cost of the nation.
  4. Other young parliamentarians (Sachin Pilots, Sandeep Dixits, Jyothiraditya Schindhias, Naveen Jindals of the world) would also test waters and the cabinet for the future (Elections 2014) can be groomed. Of course assuming that BJP with all their "mature" leaders would not be in reckoning in 2014.
I am glad better sense prevailed and people chose stability over regionalism. Hope UPA now performs well enough to justify our trust in them.

P.S.: I hope to play a significant role in 2014 Elections. From looks of it, I am going to support Congress. But again, let time show us the what it has kept in store.

Bulllet - First memories

My first memories of a Bullet are from way back in 1999 (I was 17 that time). I was going for my admission to some college and I saw this firang driving past a road block on a bullet. He was bald. He was wearing a leather jacket. And he dint stop for the road block. In fact as he was getting away, he showed the finger to the cops. That time i dint even know the meaning of the finger.

Not that I would want to do something like that , I thought it was very cool. Probably one of the coolest things that I had seen then. Not that I want to emulate it now but still its the first images of Bullet and are itched firmly in my mind.

Tweetup at Rangsharda

Met Anaggh (@anaggh), Asfaq (@asfaq), Kapil (@kapilb), Netra (@netra) and Sampad (@sampad) for a mini tweetup at Rangsharda yesterday. Along with the lovely view of the sea and full moon shining on us, we had an awesome discussion on social media (which i dint understand a bit), life (where I tried talking), businesses (heard and tried to remember everything), people (all sorts of), places to honeymoon (Sampad was more than curious and Anaggh was more than willing to share his knowledge) and other things that I have forgotten.

I had so much fun that I am sure I want to do more of these from next time on. And if you are wondering, I am @Saurabh on twitter.

On The Move

I wrote this last night while coming back from Hawk's place. I was with Neo, when we had to stop and wait for a railway crossing to open.
Waiting for the railway crossing to open. Midnight. Love this feeling. Life has come to a stand still here because thousands of other lives are on the move. Some moving towards their home. Some moving away. And some going nowhere. And yet everyone has something in common. Pursuit of dreams. Pursuit of reason. Pursuit of happiness.

I put this on FB, Flickr and BN as well. Apart from sharing pictures of this wonderful machine, I upload my biking experiences and travelogues at my number plate on Royal Enfield website.

Delhi goes to vote

Today Delhi goes to vote. Hope turnout is good (Mumbai has had a dismal show). I urge everyone to please go out and exercise their fundamental rights.

P.S.: I am not voting. I am in Mumbai and I regret not being able to.

May 2009: Goals!

In April this year, I started this monthly series of posts, called Goals. I will write on paper what I want to do/achieve in the coming month. I cant plan for the future. Leave alone thinking of 5, 10 year goals. Max I can do is think ahead like a week. Thinking ahead for a month is a way to try and do better. Also, Month is a good quantum of time to make realistic goals. I cant really get a lot of things done in a week. A year looks like an eternity. And hence a month.

Also, I have realized that I need to be able to measure my progress and I need measurable and frequent gratification (in terms of results and achievements, howsoever small they are) for my efforts. With these monthly goals, I can see sucess/failure very soon. BTW I am not only moved by success alone. I take failure with similar spring in stride. I need results. Something that gives me feedback.

Finally, I hate when output of my effort has to depend on too many external factors. I understand I need to be able to work with others and everyone has their limitations (of time, brains, efforts, motivation et al). My monthly goals are mostly personal in nature right now. Would try to extend them to work eventually.

So, monthly goals sound like a good idea. And here I am implementing them. Anyways, coming back to the goals, when May 2009 would end, I would have
  • Started wearing shoes. Not that I see any benefit out of it but I think I will.
  • Started on the book.
Thats about it. Small list for May. Lets see how it goes. BTW, this is the goal list for April 09. And this is how I fared on it.

April 2009: Goals and Output.

Off my April 2009 goals, I did ...
  1. Bought the bike. I got it on 15th April 2009. It is a Royal Enfield Bullet Eletcra 5S. I paid a fortune for it (considering my cash flow) but I am happy I did and got over it. I had been thinking about it for a long time now.
  2. Restarted blogging on SaurabhGarg.com. I did. I call my new blog "Questions. And Answers.". Why and how is here.
And I did not ...
  1. Learn to juggle 4 balls: I can do only three. I did not get to the 4th ball. Dint get time to learn the fourth ball. Actually lost the motivation to move on the 4th ball.
  2. Do Twitter Clone: Given up without writing a single code. I have left the blog the way it is. I dint even check with kAgE if he did anything about it. Knowing him, it is improbable that he would have done it.
Neo pointed out that I have done things that I could have bought with money. Things that required me to work, put in effort, I dint do anything about them. This will have to change starting May.

Trip # 1: Thoughts, Trips and Tips

I plan to take a note of *all* trips I make on my bike. Let me call the ride from Neo's place to work as Trip 1. Not that this is something special (I had a bike till about three years back and I use to ride it to work in Delhi and Chennai) but I thought I would record how I felt about things on the dream machine. And I am itching to write.

Without further ado, in "bullet" points, are the thoughts.
  • A bike could be faulty. But like true fans, I excuse the makers for oil leak on day 1. Hoping to get it fixed soon.
  • The hair (or whatever is left of it on my head) goes for a toss because of the helmet. I still have to tie a bandanna before I can put on a helmet.
  • Mumbai roads are bad. Real bad.
  • If you do not use a pair of eyeglasses, your eyes would get about 2 kilos of dust and grime.
  • Your arms would tan by about three shades.
And here are few thoughts that I had in those 45 mins that it took me to ride from Vikhroli to Andheri.
  • I need to dig out my ipod and put all the travel songs on it. Music should be a mandatory accessory for biking. So should be a chewing gum.
  • Riding is real fun. After a point a sort of monotony sets in. This is the time when you start that journey within self that you always hear about. I was coming down the JVLR and I went in that mode for a few seconds. It was nothing less than bliss. It is worth all the effort and pain.
  • Biking does not change you overnight. But moment you put the machine in first gear, that change begins. We just dont realize it, till it takes over you. It changes the way you perceive things and act on them. And mind you, its not that you are looking for a change. It just happens.
On Bullet,
  • With a bullet, comes the famous thump. You feel it. There are no words to do justice to the sound and thump.
  • Never attempt to race with mortals. You should have your own speed. Your own space and your own ride. Never compete. Its not worth it. A bullet gives you the confidence that you control one of the best machines and it is not about winning against someone you dont know and never will.
  • With a bullet, you know that you are controlling a beast and when the beast responds, you suddenly are awed by all the power. Power that you can only exert over a machine ;P
  • And of course not to mention, all the attention you get from everyone on the road. Some are awed by it. Some are jealous. Some are inspired. Some are angry. Some pretend to be indifferent . Some pretend to ignore. But you know and they know and they know that you know that you are being watched. And obviously, you notice all the attention and you want to believe that you dont notice it. But you do. I do.
That's it for the day I think. Keep tuned in for more. BTW I decided that I want to go for a Vipassana course. June is the earliest I can do. Lets hope I can do it sooner. And I need to improve my writing. My style is, too coarse. Tips?

No tips ;P

Bavra Man - Lyrics

As I was shuffling my music in the morning, this song started playing and I was struck by the brilliance of the singer. And then the lyrics caught my fancy. This is easily one of the best penned lyrics of all time. I am copying lyrics from this blog...

Movie: Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi
Singer: Swanand Kirkire, IMDB
Lyrics/Poet: Swanand Kirkire, IMDB
Music: Shantanu Moitra, IMDB

Lyrics:
Bavra Mann Dekhne Chala Ek Sapna
Bavra Mann Dekhne Chala Ek Sapna

Bavre Se Mann, Ki Dekho Bavri Hain Baatein
Bavre Se Mann, Ki Dekho Bavri Hain Baatein
Bavri Se Dhadkaane Hain, Bavri Hain Saansen
Bavri Si Karwaton Se, Nindiya Door Bhaage
Bavre Se Nain Chaahe, Bavre Jharokhon Se, Bavre Nazaron Ko Takna.
Bavra Mann Dekhne Chala Ek Sapna

Bavre Se Is Jahan Main Bavra Ek Saath Ho
Is Sayani Bheed Main Bas Haathon Mein Tera Haath Ho
Bavri Si Dhun Ho Koi, Bavra Ek Raag Ho
Bavri Si Dhun Ho Koi, Bavra Ek Raag Ho
Bavre Se Pair Chahen, Baavron Tarano Ke, Bavre Se Bol Pe Thirakna.
Bavra Mann, Dekhne Chala Ek Sapna

Bavra Sa Ho Andhera, Bavri Khamoshiyan
Bavra Sa Ho Andhera, Bavri Khamoshiyan
Thartharati Low Ho Maddham, Bavri Madhoshiyan
Bavra Ek Ghooghta Chahe, Haule Haule Bin Bataye, Bavre Se Mukhde Se Sarakana,
Bavra Mann, Dekhne Chala Ek Sapna
And here is the video from youtube. Too bad they dint shoot it.

Royal Enfield Bullet Electra is here!!

After waiting for about 5 years (I thought about it first way back in 2004 when I was just joining MDI), and talking about it forever (like here, here and here), I have been able to muster enough courage (and save enough money) to get myself a Royal Enfield Bullet Electra.

This one is a Bullet Electra 5S, 2009 Model. Silver. As compared to classic Bullets, this one has 5 gears, brake on the right side and an electric start. There are minor upgrades in terms of disk brakes, steelwool in exhaust and oil controled shock absorbers etc. The engine remains the same. So does the thump. And so does the (in)famous sound.

I got it on 15th April 2009. So far I have done some 100 KMs on it. Couldn't annouce it earlier because I did not get the registration and other documents. Finally, I am assured that by today evening I would be a free man.

Yes, a free man. A Royal Enfield for me is not so much about heritage, performance or durability. It is a dream I have cherished for a long time. Its part of the trip I am on. It is like my second life. For me its freedom from the boring routines that we call life. It takes me to a place where I will be by myself. I will be on the road discovering new places, knowing things like I have never know and experiencing the pains and pleasures of riding a Bullet. I plan to take long journeys on it, once I master the art of riding it. Lets just say, I will get in the God Mode (alternate definitions here), moment I am on a bullet.

BTW, we are calling it RajDulara (and Chetak for brevity). Named after Neo's RamPyari, finally its hum do, humare do. And please, no test rides. Will try to get my hands on a camera over the weekend and upload some pictures. Next on agenda? A trip to Leh perhaps?

P.S.: My last bike was Kawasaki Bajaj Caliber Croma. I had it for about 5 years before I moved to Mumbai. It was sold without me ever getting to know about it. I plan to make this one last for the rest of my life.

P.P.S.: Next todo is to create a trip poster for myself. These posters are just brilliant. Check them out.

Happy Birthday Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar turns 36. Very very happy returns of the day Sachin. May you get us the world cup in 2011.

P.S.: And this is the day when I got my gmail in 2004 :)

99 - Delhi Destiny

Right in the morning I have this bad habit of listening to music. While channel surfing all the music channels, I stumbled upon this fun song titled Delhi Destiny. Reached office and first thing I did (after checking my emails) was hunting for it on IMDB and Youtube.

IMDB just says that its a comedy releasing in 2009. From the song, I know it has Kunal Khemu, Soha Ali Khan, Cyrus Brocha, Simone Singh, Boman Irani in the movie. Who else?

This is one of those movies that I want to watch. Any idea when is it releasing?

The Biking and Travel Blog

What should I call it?

[UPDATE]
I posted the same on twitter and FB. Got a few responses. Want to add more?

Titan - Be More - Advertisement

This is one of those brands whose communication and ads inspired me to choose advertising as a career.

Pricing and Demand

Lets say I am selling shoes. These shoes are not meant for the entire world, but for a select few. Lets say shoes for computer gamers. Something that all gamers would want for sure.

Once I have a product to sell, I have a few options of creating a pseudo demand (and inflate prices). Let me call them models.

Model 1
I create 500 pairs and sell each at say Rs. 100. Like a typical sales process happen.

Model 2
I create 500 pairs. Sell them in lots of 50 at Rs. 50 each. Once each lot gets over, I jack up the price by Rs. 25. I create that "rush" where everyone would want to buy the shoe when its still 50. If lot 1, gets over, everyone knows that if they dint buy it for 75 (and miss this lot), the price would go up at 100. So on and so forth. Also, since these shoes are limited in number, by raising the "price", I raise the "value" of the shoes that have been earlier purchased. I theoretically sell faster and make more money.

Model 3
Reverse of Model 2. Lets say I want at least Rs. 100 per pair. I create lots. I sell the first lot for Rs. 200. Every incremental lot, I reduce the price. I think this is the worst of all. This is infact the winners curse. The price for other users falls as a result of actions of the winners. But there is something interesting. Moment I slash the prices from Rs. 200 to Rs. 100, I think a lot of people would compare the two prices and use models like contrast and grounding to buy in herds.

Is there a merit in thinking about pricing and economics before you create a business? Which of the three is advisable in the long run if your product is not a commodity? Is there a fourth, fifth, sixth .. way to think about pricing and generate demand.

Thoughts?

Wrote while visiting MDI on my recent trip to Delhi.

The Weekend - 11, 12 April 09

I was in Delhi this weekend. A quick summary would be

Train - Mathura - Agra - Fatehpur Sikri - Traffic Jam - Delhi - Home - CP - Home - Cyntax - Amar Motors - GK II - Select City Walk - MDI - Maggi@GE - Go Air - Meru - Godrej Hillside Colony - Creativeland

And like always, there are details to follow. Lemme see when I get time to talk about em.

  • Train - It was sheer luck that allowed me to board the train. I was to board from Borivali station and my rick driver took me to Dahisar. With 6 mins to ETD. And we had a RAC ticket. That meant my friend and I were forced to share one berth for the night.
  • Mathura - Got down at Mathura. After spending the night sitting, walking in the bogey, remmebering the time table and amount of time it stops at each station, shifting weight, getting down at all the stations, eating whatever came my way, reading The Case of Exploding Mangoes.
  • Agra - Yes, the Taj Mahal city. I went there and did not see the Taj. If there was no Taj, Agra would have been one of those million little cities in India that no one would have ever heard of and no one would ever go there. Everything from people to government to administration to weather was very average.
  • Fatehpur Sikri - I dint know that Fatehpur was a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If its one, its been left to rot by the administration. Anyways, the place is very serene. You could be in the middle of a maddening crowd and yet be with yourself. I was hoping for a miracle (I think I am looking for some kind of support to lap onto) but it never happened. May be next time?
  • Traffic Jam - En route from Agra to Delhi, around the Haryana border, farmers were protesting for something. Collosal waste of time, money, resources and everything else. I have always hated those "strikes". Anyways, I could see all the Munger's mental models in action. From group think to social proof to biases and authority misinfluence to reciprocation.
  • Delhi - Home!
  • Home - Maa kay haath ka khana :D
  • CP - BTW the official name is Rajiv Chowk, its still called by one and all as CP. I too prefer CP. Its the best place to hang around in Delhi IMHO. I make at leat two trips to the place for sure everytime I go there.
  • Cyntax - Kunal and me spoke about Cyntax. He looks committed to it and hopefully I can make up my mind soon.
  • Amar Motors - One of the reason I went to Delhi was to buy the bike. Went to this dealer called Amar Motors. For a company like Royal Enfield and a product like Bullet, the dealership was a mess for sure. The brand, product, company attracts certain kind of people and there was no one there to take care of those kinds of people. Guess you can do very well with branding and marketing efforts but when it comes to real life interactions, you have to find a way to manage them!
  • GK II - No notes. Boring visit to that market. Obviously there were tons of pretty faces. Wish Mumbai ones were like that.
  • Select City Walk - Met Shubhi and she insisted that we goto Select City Walk. I want to know who are the people who goto that mall and actually buy things from there. Every thing was way out of my reach!
  • MDI - Went to MDI. I went to my room (#309), SharmaJi's, Change Masters (its now called IFCI Swarna Jayanti Hostel), Dome Terrace, the loos, the library, Jhajis, Acad Block, CC etc. It was so full of emotions that I could have cried. Somehow prevented it. Anyways, a visit to MDI also reaffirmed my belief that I am most comfortable when I am in a campus like setting. I wrote this text while I was roaming around the CC
  • Maggi @ GE - When we were at MDI, Maggi at a road side dhaba outside GE's office in Gurgaon was our staple food. For the old times sake we went to this dhaba and got the maggi. I ate it when I was in the meru on way back to home and it was bliss. People miss food from homes, I missed food from this dhaba.
  • Go Air - Flew with Go Air. Ok experience. Flight was delayed by 40 mins. Once I was inside the aircraft, things were on time.
  • Meru - This is where the power of branding was evident. We were going to take a cab home. There were at least three paid AC taxi services available at the airport. We dint even look at them. Without even talking to them, we went to Meru, got in the cab and left. I think this is where Meru does well compared to other businesses. Marketing is ok but the experience that I get as a customer when I travel with them is exceptional. From comfortable rides to courteous drivers to punctuality to electronic billing. Guess
  • Godrej Hillside Colony - Surfed the web. Slept fitfully for three hours.
  • Creativeland - Back at work!
I think I like this new way of logging travel. Of course it cant replace the good old travelogue, may be I will write that too but this is convenient for logging in the highlights.

And no, I wasn't carrying any camera and there are no pictures. Vivek took this pic way back in 2005 at Fatehpur. May be an apt place for a ref?
